Using Essential Oils for Green Cleaning
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant-derived oils. These oils are extracted from plants and contain the natural scent and property of the plant which they derive from. Essential oils are frequently diffused into the air for aromatherapy, and can also be used in cleaning. Because they are solely plant-derived, they are 100 percent all natural and contain many beneficial properties.
How to Use Essential Oils
Essential oils are strong, so it is important to use them correctly. They should never be applied topically or ingested, as they can cause adverse reactions and irritation.
There are many different ways to clean with essential oils, but one of the most popular and versatile methods is to create an all-natural spray. In an eight-ounce bottle, combine 4 ounces of water, 4 ounces distilled white vinegar, and 12 to 24 drops of your preferred essential oil (or use a mix). For tougher jobs, adjust the recipe and use a 2:1 ratio of vinegar to water.
Together, vinegar and essential oils are a powerful combination that creates an environment where microorganisms have difficulty growing. Depending on the essential oil(s) you choose, your all-natural spray will have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal qualities. Essential oils are also deodorizing due to their strong scents.
Below are some of the most popular essential oil choices.
Lemon
Known for its bright, fresh scent, lemon is a popular choice for aromatherapy, as it has been shown to lift people's mood. It is also one of the most effective choices for surface cleansing. Its antiseptic, antimicrobial, and bactericidal mean that it cuts through germs and grime with ease. Lemon essential oil is also a great choice for odor removal due to its scent.
Sweet Orange
Sweet orange (or just orange) essential oil is antiseptic, antifungal, and antibacterial. It is also a powerful degreaser. Sweet orange is great for dirty cutting boards and other places where raw meat has been as it has been shown to inhibit the growth of E. coli.
Lavender
One of the most popular oils for diffusing due to its relaxing scent, lavender is also a worthy disinfectant. With antiseptic, antiviral, fungicidal, bactericidal, and deodorization properties, it is a must-have in your essential oil arsenal.
