Keeping Fall Bonfires Under Control/Bonfire Safety at Home

What's your favorite fall pastime? Is it going to a haunted house, jumping in a pile of crunchy leaves, drinking apple cider (or a pumpkin spice latte!), hosting a bonfire, or all of the above? Whatever your favorite fall activity, safety always comes first. The last thing you want is a fall bonfire, meant to be a fun gathering, going up in flames because you didn't maintain it properly. Below, we have put together a list of things to remember when you are hosting a bonfire and ways you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe during this festive time of year.
What Safety Precautions Should You Remember When Hosting A Bonfire?
- Do a temperature check! You don't want to host a bonfire on a windy night…
- Watch out for anyone running too close to a bonfire so that no one gets hurt.
- Is your bonfire in a legal spot? Research fire regulations in your area and take precautions accordingly.
- The wood you're burning matters! Ensure the wood is dry and seasoned and that nothing you're putting into the fire is coated or treated.
- If you have long hair, tie it back and don't wear loose clothes that have a possibility of catching fire.
- Keep a hose attached to a water source or buckets of water, just in case. You never know when/if you will need it.
How Else Can You Protect Yourself And Your Loved Ones At A Bonfire?
- Before lighting your bonfire, check to see if any pets or outside animals like squirrels and hedgehogs found their way into the pit, and bring them out if they have.
- Instead of pouring petrol to start a bonfire, use firelighters to keep hazardous flare-ups at bay.
- Do NOT burn waste from your home- it's not only dangerous, but the flames from burnt waste can be harmful to inhale and can cause pollution.
Bonfires can be a great way to connect with loved ones and ring in a season that brings a slew of holidays with it. However, it only takes one mistake for the night to be memorable- and not necessarily in a good way.
