Smoke Alarms save Nashville lives and property

Every year the National Fire Protection Association takes a week to focus on spreading the awareness on the importance of fire prevention. This fire prevention week was started back in 1927 to honor those killed in the Great Chicago fire on October 8, 1871 that killed more than 250 people.
According to the NFPA, almost 60% of fire deaths from 2007 to 2011 happened in homes that either did not have smoke alarms or had smoke alarms that were not working at the time. These statistics are what lead the NFPA to choose this year’s theme, “Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month”. Smoke alarms not only can save lives, but can also lessen the chance for greater water damage and smoke damage done throughout the building.
Smoke alarm safety tips from the NFPA:
- Test all smoke alarms at least once a month
- A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high up on the wall
- Replace all smoke alarms every 10 years
- Install smoke alarms inside and outside of every bedroom/sleeping area
