4 Ways To Prevent Flooding In Your Home

3/24/2021 (Permalink)

As spring rolls into full force in Middle Tennessee, lots of spring showers and rain storms come with it. Rainy season in Nashville means that your home is more vulnerable to flooding, which is why it’s smart to take preventive measures to prevent flooding from happening if at all possible.

So, how do you prevent flooding in your home?

1) Elevate your HVAC equipment.

Your boiler, utilities, and air-conditioning units all should be elevated, especially if they live in your basement or the lower levels of your home. HVAC equipment is often very vulnerable to flooding and water due to its electrical nature, and when appliances, electricity, and water mix, nothing good occurs. If you can move your HVAC equipment to an upper level of your home or build a platform to elevate it off the floor, you’d be wise to do that.

2) Sandbag your property where water could easily flow in.

Like a shoreline, sandbags can be the first line of defense from water coming into your home if you are situated in a location where water pools easily and you may find that water can come rushing toward your home at particular spots on your property. This is especially true if you have a basement that may be a great entry point for water, and you should consider putting sandbags by its entrance and windows if there are any.

3) Invest in absorbent mulch.

Your landscaping can help you prevent flooding in your home. Yes, you read that right. Tending to your landscaping by spreading absorbent mulch around your trees and flower beds can help soak up excess water so that it doesn’t flow toward or into your home. Putting a rain barrel by your downspout may also be able to combat and reduce potential flooding or water damage.

4) Clear debris away from storm drains.

The storm drains outside your home exist for a reason. Make sure any leaves or debris are cleared away from your storm drains so that water can flow into them and drain away, not pool and potentially enter your home. Physically remove the debris so that it can’t just flow right back into the drain, and using a plunger, a drain snake, or an auger may be in order.

While these four tips will help you prevent and combat flooding in your home, you can’t always completely prevent these emergencies from happening.
