Preparing For Fall Storms In Middle Tennessee

9/29/2020 (Permalink)

After the summer storms roll out, the fall storms roll in when you’re in Middle Tennessee. At least that’s how it feels, right? Middle Tennessee storms bring lots of rain and gusty winds along with cooler temperatures, and all of these elements can create breeding grounds for mold growth as well as potential flooding and water or storm damage. In order to minimize the chances that fall storms take you by surprise and cause damage to your home, we recommend preparing your home or business in the following ways.

1. Create a storm safety plan.

As always, your health and safety is top priority, which is why it’s important to create a storm safety plan detailing what you will do if a storm is coming. Consider creating an emergency kit in a backpack including a flashlight, a first aid kit, bottled water, nonperishable food, a battery powered radio, and essential medicines and emergency funds. This will be quick and easy to grab if you ever have to evacuate your home because of a pending storm or tornado coming your way.

2. Trim or remove trees that have limbs that fall in the path of your home.

Be proactive about trimming any tree limbs that are positioned to fall onto your home if a storm were to tear them down. This will prevent the ugly mess that accompanies limbs tearing through your siding or your roof. Removing trees may be the better option if they’re dead or dying and are likely to become dead weight during a gusty fall storm.

3. Clean and repair your gutters and downspouts.

Make sure that your gutters and downspouts are free of debris and efficiently set up to direct water away from the foundation of your home. If your gutters and downspouts aren’t properly positioned, an influx of water may pool around the foundation of your home or on your roof, making it susceptible to water damage in the foundation or elsewhere.

4. Install emergency lighting.

Your power is often the first thing to go when a tree breaks down or a telephone pole falls during a storm, and it’s a smart idea to invest in emergency lighting to kick in as soon as your power goes out. This will ensure that you can still move around your house safely in the midst of a storm.

Whether a tornado blows past your home or a tree limb falls to the ground, you may not have the energy or the tools to clean it up in a reasonable timeframe. If you’re dealing with storm damage or water or fire damage of any type as a result of a storm, the team at SERVPRO of Belle Meade/West Nashville is ready to come to the rescue.
