Checking Your Attic For Water Damage
7/28/2020 (Permalink)
Your attic is the number one place where damage from heavy rainfall can occur, and it’s also one of the places in your home that you won’t visit regularly. A trip up to the attic is only made when you need something you have put away for a special event, such as a holiday or a birthday, but it is very important to check your attic area periodically for leaks and water damage, especially during the summer storm season here in Middle Tennessee.
Your attic will take the brunt of summer storms, just as your roof will. When the roof sustains damage from high winds or flying debris, such as loose or missing roofing material, you will probably see water stains in the attic. These let you know a problem is developing. An issue in the attic that is left unchecked will end up affecting the interior of your property, and spaces that are damp and dark for any length of time will put you at risk for a mold infestation. It only takes a day or two for a colony to start.
Follow these tips to help you keep on top of any damage to your attic:
- Check your attic for damage regularly. It’s important to look over your attic space often, just as you do all the other areas of your home or business. You want to make sure this area hasn’t experienced any water damages, which can spread to problems with your interior ceilings if left unattended.
- Check your roofing after bad weather. It’s crucial to check all roofing after a strong storm and/or high winds to ensure it is still intact. Flying debris, such as tree branches or loose building materials, can cause serious issues in volatile weather.
